Safety Information
Fire Safety:
Know the A, B, Cs of the proper use of fire extinguishers. There are different types of extinguishers for different types of fires. It is natural to use the extinguisher located closest to a fire. So, it essential that the correct type and size be placed close to a potential hazard.
To use a fire extinguisher safely and correctly on a small fire, remember the acronym PASS: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep, while standing 6 to 8 feet away from the flames with an exit behind you.
The PASS Steps:
- Pull: Pull the pin at the top of the extinguisher to break the seal and unlock the operating lever.
- Aim: Point the nozzle or hose low, directly at the base of the fire rather than up at the flames.
- Squeeze: Squeeze the handle or lever slowly and evenly to release the pressurized extinguishing agent.
- Sweep: Sweep the nozzle from side to side across the base of the fire until it appears to be completely out.
Safety and Evacuation:
- Only attempt to fight a small, contained fire (such as one the size of a wastebasket).
- Keep your back toward a safe exit route at all times.
- If the fire grows, starts spreading, or creates heavy smoke, stop immediately, evacuate the area, and call 911
